5. Pay Attention to Light

A photograph is all about light
so always think of how the light is striking your subject. When
shooting outdoors, move around so that the sun is behind you and to one
side. When the light is coming from behind you and slightly off
center, it brings out color and shades, and the slight angle (side
lighting) produces some shadow that will bring out texture and form.
If you're unable to change your
position and bright light is behind your subject, remember to use the
"fill flash" setting on your camera to eliminate shadows.

I prefer photographing people outdoors
when the skies are partly overcast; where's there's plenty of light for
good color, but no harsh, contrasting shadows.
Remember the words of George Eastman,
founder of Kodak:
"Light makes photography. Embrace light. Admire
it. Love it. But above all, know light. Know it for all you are worth,
and you will know the key to photography."
